"Biodiversity loss and climate change are both driven by human economic activities and mutually reinforce each other. Neither will be successfully resolved unless both are tackled together."
This quote by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is about the key message of a June 2021 report published jointly by IPBES – which studies biodiversity – and Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – which studies the climate system.
WHY THIS REPORT MATTERS
🌍 This Report is the first-ever collaboration between IPBES and IPCC!
THE REPORT’S MESSAGE
❗️Human activity is driving biodiversity loss and climate change, which reinforce each other.
🔗 Since the biodiversity and climate crises are linked, they can only be solved together.
💡 The solution is “transformative change” comprised of fast, far-reaching actions – collective and individual – that positively impact both areas.
5 ACTIONS TO FIGHT BIODIVERSITY LOSS & CLIMATE CHANGE
🛑 Stop loss of, and restore, species- and carbon-rich ecosystems
📈 Increase sustainable agricultural and forestry practices
🏞 Strengthen and better target conservation actions (e.g., protected areas, migration corridors, and better integration of nature and People), supported by climate adaptation/innovation
⚠️ Stop government subsidies that support actions harmful to biodiversity
👤 Change individual lifestyles
PROTECTED AREAS
🤗 Protected areas represent about 15% of land and 7.5% of ocean. To ensure a sustainable future, it is estimated that protected areas must range from 30-50% of all land and ocean surface areas.
🐾 That is why we are proud to be a Rainforest Trust Conservation Circle Partner! Its critical mission is to save species by protecting critical habitats around the world.
💲In 2021, Rainforest Trust pledged $500M to the “Protecting Our Planet Challenge” ($5B commitment by 9 charities to conserve 30% of the Planet by 2030)!
