What is COP15 and why should you care?
WHAT IS COP15?
🌏 The 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.
🐾 Also called “Nature COP”.
🇨🇦 Montreal, Canada, Dec 7-19, 2022.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
🦊 Biggest international biodiversity summit in over 10 years.
🐻 Delegates from 196 countries will set new targets to stop global biodiversity loss.
🐻❄️ Why?
⚠️ 1M species are at risk of extinction.
‼️ This means ecosystems could collapse within 2 generations. All life on earth – human and non-human – requires healthy ecosystems to survive!
🌡️ Saving species and ecosystems also fights climate change. The climate crisis was the focus of COP27 (“Climate COP”), which just ended.
WHAT WE NEED FROM COP15
🐵 Governments have not met the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets set at COP10 in 2010.
🐨 We need COP15 to set a global goal for protecting nature. Ideally 30% by 2030.
🐼 We especially need COP15 to adopt the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework for “living in harmony with nature”. It tells countries what they should do to protect species and ecosystems for the benefit of our Planet and People.
🦁 Much of the Framework’s text is unsettled and up for debate. World leaders need to approve the Framework now because time is running out to combat the nature emergency!
WHAT YOU CAN DO
🐯 You, a regular person, can influence the outcome of COP15.
🐰How?
🗣️ Talk about it!
🐭 The more people know about COP15, the more attention it gets, and the more pressure builds on governments to agree on an ambitious plan to save nature.
