What are “endangered species” and why should you care?
WHAT ARE “ENDANGERED SPECIES”?
🐾 Any species of wildlife that is at risk of extinction, which happens when the last individual of a species dies.
👀 3 categories: Critically Endangered (extremely high risk), Endangered (very high risk), and Vulnerable (high risk).
IS THERE A SPECIES EXTINCTION CRISIS? HOW MANY ENDANGERED SPECIES ARE THERE?
❗️There is a linked Extinction-Climate Crisis, and many scientists believe we are living through the 6th Mass Extinction.
‼️ 1 million species face extinction, of which ½ million are committed to extinction, meaning they don’t have enough habitat to survive long-term.
⚠️ IUCN’s “Red List of Threatened Species” is the world’s most comprehensive source on at-risk species. So far, 142,500+ species have been assessed, of which 40,000+ species are endangered, including 41% of amphibians, 37% of sharks and rays, 33% of reef corals, 26% of mammals, and 13% of birds.
WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?
📉 Species extinction is bad for the Planet and People because it has disastrous effects on ecosystems that sustain human and non-human life.
IS THERE HOPE?
🙏 Don’t despair! We have power to stop the 1 million threatened species from dying out. From action comes hope, not the other way around!!
WHAT ACTION CAN YOU TAKE?
🎬 Needed action is individual and collective.
🧍 Key individual actions are speaking up for wildlife and wild places, and changing lifestyles, like Buy Less, Buy Better.
👫 Key collective actions include the “Protecting Our Planet Challenge”, a $5B commitment by 9 charities – like our official partner Rainforest Trust – to conserve 30% of the Planet by 2030.
WHAT ACTION ARE WE TAKING?
🌱 We offer nature-inspired artwear and artdécor, designed by global ARTivists, that is sustainable, unique, and gives back to at-risk wildlife through our partnership with Rainforest Trust.
👏 So far, (y)our donations have protected 1,195 acres of tropical rainforest and other critical habitat and kept 176,262 mT of carbon dioxide equivalents safely stored!
